I Shall Burn a Candle

It is the end of a dear day
so that I shall burn a candle
and wrap the evening smoke
about me.

I have relinquished
my nagging soul
and given it all over
to the universe or whatever it is
that is going to do
whatever it's going to do
and has some plan
that I can never hope
to understand,
much less revise or influence.

I burn a candle for all the poor souls
on their knees demanding and begging
for this moment or the next to be anything
other than what it is or will be.
