In the early fourteenth century, the evolution of music reflected the turmoil in the Christian Church as the church began to lose control over its clergy as well as the common man.
Secular music eased its way into the inner ecclesiastical circles and even Gregorian chants began to be usurped by the 'new' music. A democratic revolution sprung forth against the controlling intrusions of the Medieval Church, in part in a musical rebellion.
Toward the end of the Medieval Period, as the Church's grip was loosened, the non-Latin forbearers of modern carols arose. Some of the old carols, largely sung in Latin, began to shift to the vernacular language. Carols and music became the modern conduit through which the people expressed their feelings, a nascent sense of freedom and pushed back against oppressive religious conservatism.

During the 16th century, Christmas evolved into the holiday of carols, but the rejection of caroling by the Puritans in the 17th century dampened the tradition in England for over 160 years. Believing that Christmas should be treated as a solemn occasion, the Puritan regime of Oliver Cromwell completely banned Christmas carols in England between 1649 and 1660.
During this period, the carols were distributed in secret on printed sheets and were preserved. When Charles Dickens (1812 - 1890) was a boy, it was widely believed by those in power that the carol would become extinct. Dickens' writings on the true spirit of Christmas helped restore Christmas festivities and the popularity of the carol revived.
Today the distinction is generally drawn between the Christmas carol and Christmas songs which are generally not based in religion and more contemporary. Even traditional Christmas Songs may reflect the complex history of the carol and Christmas itself.
The next time you hear "On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me..." know that with a few slight twists to history, you might be listening to a seasonal melody describing the "Twelve Days of Saturnalia." The original Roman celebration around the winter solstice (December 21st), began with the feast of Saturnalia and ended with the Sol Invictus festival over a period of, you guessed it, 12 days.
