Ok, so to many, the age difference alone raises red flags. Tom Cruise is 42 (and trying to act younger), and Katie Holmes is 26 (and appears much younger).
But now, Tom Cruise’s antics on recent talk shows like Oprah Winfrey, Jay Leno, the NBC show "Today" and Katie Holmes’ evasive and indirect answers to many interview questions have many calling the relationship a ‘front.’ But then, the question remains, a front for what?
Tom Cruise drew attention by jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch and exhibiting excessive exuberance over his relationship with Katie Holmes. At the time of the show’s airing, their relationship was only six weeks old. This on the heels of Hollywood rumors that Tom was ‘shopping’ or ‘auditioning’ for girlfriends. Word even had it that Katie wasn’t on the ‘top’ of the list, but Tom Cruise had been seeking a relationship with Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, and even Lindsay Lohan.

Reportedly, Jessica Alba even went to Tom’s home for what she thought was an interview for a possible upcoming role with Tom in a major movie.
Once there, Tom’s questions reportedly seemed more like a ‘Blind Date’ video greeting than an acting audition.
Tom Cruise has garnered a reputation as a very private person in Hollywood over the years – rarely granting interviews, and then being reluctant to speak of his relationships. Now suddenly he is in the spotlights, and he seems to have intentionally stepped into them.
Tom Cruise has also gained critics of late through his words to the media, whether it is his enthusiasm over Scientology, or his criticism of Brooke Shields for taking anti-depressants after her recent pregnancy.
Katie Holmes’ behavior, although different than Tom’s, has also been drawing media attention. Her answers to interview questions regarding her relationship with Tom Cruise have been evasive, non-committal, and mixed with conflicting body language signals.
During her recent appearance on Regis and Kelly, Katie Holmes used the word ‘amazing’ what seemed like a dozen times when describing her relationship with Tom Cruise. This, combined with her avoidance of eye contact with the hosts, her head shaking while answering questions, and her gaze upward and vague answer when asked how she met Tom, has many people wondering even more about the sincerity of their love.
Katie Holmes’ answer to David Letterman’s question about a possible marriage to Tom Cruise in the future was: “I’m smiling, aren’t I?”
Young Katie Holmes, who launched her career on TV's Dawson's Creek, appears in the summer action film Batman Begins, which opened June 15. Cruise stars in director Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds, which hits theaters on June 29.
Cruise split with girlfriend Penelope Cruz last year. He and Nicole Kidman, who have two children, divorced in 2001. He was previously married to actress Mimi Rogers.
Holmes was previously engaged to actor Chris Klein, though they recently broke off their relationship.
Nicole Kidman has blasted ex Tom Cruise's public antics over his relationship with Katie Holmes, but in a very subtle manner.
When questioned about Cruise's behavior, Kidman would only comment: "In terms of your life, if you start to exploit it, then what's real and what's not?"
The dig was in response to the Top Gun star's daily proclamations of his love for 26-year-old Katie Holmes and their constant canoodling on red carpets everywhere.
But Nicole - appearing in the film version of Bewitched - also added: "If Tom's in love, I'm happy for him."
Kidman and Cruise, married in 1990, stayed together until 2001.
Issues of Age?
Cruise is 42.

Tom's been casting his eye younger and younger and younger for the past 15 years.
He was first married to an actress seven years older, Mimi Rogers. Next marriage - Nicole Kidman, five years his junior.
Tom's next 'girl'friend, Spanish beauty Penelope Cruz, was 12 years younger.
Now Katie is a whopping 16 years younger.
